The school was constructed as a WPA building and opened in 1941 as Fleming County High School. It was built from stones that were cut in the Fleming County area. In 1974 it became the Fleming County Middle School housing seventh and eighth grade students. The Fleming County Board of Education changed the name of the school to Simons Middle School in 1984 to honor Joe Simons, former principal who died during the school year. In 1996 Simons Middle School underwent extensive renovations with a new cafeteria, gymnasium, media center, music room, video-conferencing classroom and offices added to the structure.
